Portman Recruitment is very proud to announce it will be hosting a Charity Hike to raise money for a chosen children’s charity.  This will become an annual event where people get together from the social work world and beyond. This will be a great chance to meet new people in the great outdoors. Official Countdown to the beginning of Portman Peaks:Â
The route ascends the moorland, offering breathtaking countryside views and interesting sites like a sheltered bench on Great Hill, TV masts, and a 1958 air disaster site on Winter Hill. Descend past landmarks such as Crooked Edge Hill, also known as the Two Lads, and ascend Rivington Pike to find an 18th-century tower. Explore the Rivington Terraced Gardens with its Japanese Lake, Dovecote Tower, and historical ruins. The journey continues through Rivington Hall, Brere’s Meadow, and along Yarrow and Anglezarke Reservoirs, ending back at White Coppice cricket club. Note the necessity of proper footwear as it will be boggy in places.
The British weather is unpredictable at best, so always plan for the worst when deciding what kit to take. Always better to have extra clothing in your rucksack.
The hike will include a picnic-style lunch stop where you’ll need to bring your own food
Energy food such as snack bars and sweets always go down well
Note that although there may be pub stops, it is unlikely that there will be time to eat at pubs, as the pubs may be very busy, or there may be a large group walk in
Great Hill, at an elevation of 1250 ft, provides some incredible panoramic views from Anglezarke Moor of Winter Hill, Rivington Pike, Round Loaf and Darwen Tower. From here, you have the option of heading to any of these places should you decide to, or you can turn around and go back the way you came.
White Coppice To Great Hill is a pleasant hike, especially on a beautiful summer’s day, and will easily clock 10, 000 steps onto your pedometer. Definitely a walk for someone who doesn’t want to spend too much time on a hike or get too adventurous, but to do a hearty, cardiovascular bit of exercise.
Taking dogs up is permitted but there are sheep roaming as you’re travelling through open farmland so please keep your dog on a lead at all times. Unfortunately there’s been instances where dogs have savaged and killed sheep in this area due to inconsiderate owners. Respect the countryside.
Just us on an exciting 11.5-mile trail near Chorley through Rivington Moor’s peaks: Great Hill, Winter Hill, and Rivington Pike, starting at White Coppice cricket club.
Please avoid wearing trainers as they won’t keep your feet dry (think long wet grass, boggy moorland, streams, and muddy fields) and they offer very little ankle support on rough paths (mountain walks especially), making twisting an ankle far easier.
White Coppice is a 10 minute drive from the centre of Chorley. Go down B6229 onto Heapey Rd and then Tithe Barn Lane before turning right onto Coppice Lane. Follow this lane down to the bottom and you’ll enter White Coppice.
Allow a good 4-6 hours to do this walk
Not pram or wheelchair friendly at all. Steep rocky sections. You need to be sturdy on your feet.
Only attempt this hike with young kids if they are used to hiking.
